How the training plan works

Each stage builds on the one before. Foundations teaches the keyboard, reading music, rhythm, scales, intervals, key signatures and spelling. Building adds ear training, chord symbols, minor keys, chords in a key, progressions, and pentatonic and blues. Strength brings seventh and colour chords, voice leading, transposing, the modes, melody and form, rhythm in depth, and sound and tuning. Performance is jazz harmony, chords from outside the key, modulation, altered chords and chord-scale theory.

Every program is a short course of daily sessions, shaped like a workout: a warm-up that reviews earlier days, a short lesson, drills, a finisher you have to pass, and a recap. Use the whole program library, or dip into the single drills and charts whenever you need a reference.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I start?

If you are new to music theory, start with The Keyboard. If you already know some, tick "I know this" on the programs you are comfortable with and the training plan points you at the first gap. You can also take any program's test day first: pass it and the earlier days count as done.

Do I have to follow the training plan in order?

No. The order is the one that builds most smoothly, but nothing is locked. Every lesson has short "rusty on…?" boxes so you can dip in anywhere.

How long does the whole training plan take?

There are 33 programs and 192 short sessions of about ten minutes each. On a daily split that is roughly 27 weeks; most people take longer and mix in free practice.

What do I need?

Just a browser. Everything is free, needs no account, and your progress is saved on your device.

What if I already know some of this?

Use "I know this" to skip ahead, and the test-out option on each program to prove it. The whole point of the training plan is that nobody has to repeat what they know.
